Utah Adventure Journal Racing Team T-Shirt

Got a t-shirt in the mail today from client Paul Oelerich, editor of Utah Adventure Journal. The shirts are for the magazine's sponsored racing team and features an illustration I did for them awhile back for an article titled "Mountain Men Don't Wear Hot Pink." Very cool of them to send me one and I will wear it proudly once the weather warms up a little more! Thanks Paul!

New York Toy Fair display illustration

I recently completed a giant display illustration for TeeGee Toys, who will be first-time exhibitors at the 2012 New York Toy Fair this Feb 12-14. At 10'x8' it is literally the biggest job I've ever had! I'm super excited that my work will be on display at one of the coolest events in the world. Below are some shots of me with the final display before it has its debut in NY.

Back Home from Bali

Got back from my month-long trip to Bali last week. Still having some trouble with jet-lag, but I'm mostly back on a normal schedule. I took loads of reference photos of Balinese art: paintings, sculpture, architecture, woodwork and anything else I thought I might like to work into my own art at some point. I also did a fair amount of sketching, which I will share soon. For now, here's a sample of some of the photos I took:

Low-Tech Thrills: Fun with a Pinhole Camera

I was graciously invited by a former professor of mine, Rosita Gonzales, to help assist in a special workshop for high school kids on photography. My great good fortune continued to unfold as one of the kids didn't show up, thereby offering me the opportunity to participate in the workshop as well. We made pinhole cameras out of old Ovaltine boxes (if it's round, is it still a box?), electrical tape and black felt to line the inside.

Rosita then provided us with some photo paper, which we curled up and stuffed inside and then went off to make our picture. While not very predictable or precise, the results are still pretty cool. Photos come out hazy, grainy, distorted and spooky. The curl of the paper creates a kind of fish-eye effect on wider shots, while my own camera added a strange almond shaped-vignette.

The only down-side (apart from the fact that half of the high school kids ended up taking better photos than me) would be that in order to continue experimenting with my pinhole camera, I'd have to invest in some basic darkroom supplies. Who knows? Maybe I'll give it a go sometime. Until then I think these will make for some interesting textures for some digital art...

First Weekend Photos: Carver Healing Arts Gallery

Got hired to take some photos for the first of many First Weekend events over at Carver Healing Arts Gallery in Richmond. It was a great event with fire-spinners, jugglers, hula-hoop girls, belly dancing, live music, cool art and a dwarf-throwing contest.

Well, ok...there wasn't a dwarf-throwing contest, but it was still a pretty nifty event. You can check out the rest of the photos I took here: http://viewmorepics. myspace. com/index. cfm?fuseaction=user. viewAlbums&friendID=399595514

I'm not that great a photographer, but it was fun, and hopefully I learned something!
